The Farm by Emily McKay

The Farm (The Farm, #1)Date Published: August 1, 2012

Dates Read: 9/30/14 to 10/5/14

Rating: 4.5 stars

Synopsis: Life was different in the Before: before vampires began devouring humans in a swarm across America; before the surviving young people were rounded up and quarantined. These days, we know what those quarantines are—holding pens where human blood is turned into more food for the undead monsters, known as Ticks. Surrounded by electrical fences, most kids try to survive the Farms by turning on each other…

And when trust is a thing of the past, escape is nearly impossible.

Lily and her twin sister Mel have a plan. Though Mel can barely communicate, her autism helps her notice things no one else notices—like the portion of electrical fence that gets turned off every night. Getting across won’t be easy, but as Lily gathers what they need to escape, a familiar face appears out of nowhere, offering to help…

Carter was a schoolmate of Lily’s in the Before. Managing to evade capture until now, he has valuable knowledge of the outside world. But like everyone on the Farm, Carter has his own agenda, and he knows that behind the Ticks is an even more dangerous threat to the human race…

My Thoughts: I really enjoyed this book! I ended up liking it way more then I thought I was going to which I am so happy about. It was my first “creepy” read of the month and it was a great one to start with. I honestly don’t know why I let this sit on my shelf as long as I did before reading it. The characters were great and the plot was fantastic. The first probably 100 pages were a little slower then the rest of the book but once I got past that part I had to force myself to stop reading to get things done, like going to work lol. The Ticks are creepy as hell and I definitely would not want to be in a world where those things exist. The way this book ended made me want to go out and buy the second one so I can continue on with the story and see where things go. So I will be picking up the second book very soon and reading it!

I can’t remember why but it took me forever to get into this book when I read it. I hope you read the sequel, I’d love to read a review on it before giving the series another go 🙂
